Rangitoto

It is school holidays so the family went for a walk up Rangitoto. It was a beautiful Spring day and a good time of year to visit. In the summer that scoria gets hot!

I let the big kid use my old point and shoot and he had a ball with it:

It never ceases to amaze me that an island composed almost totally of rock with only a token amount of soil can support so much plant life. Rocks like these:

Note how black this rock is. And then imagine it in summer with the sun beating down on you from above and the heat being reflected back from the rock below. It is hot (I still remember it from a school trip many moons ago!).
The path to the summit is far from smooth and not small children friendly (hence the reason we didn't get to the top):

This was as high as me and the boys got:

The plant life is pretty interesting though:

I especially loved the kidney ferns:

Kind of freaky to think this was molten lava not that long ago (in geological terms):

Some of the old baches on the island:

A historic archway - that used the be a toilet entrance. Is it only NZ that has historical toilets? This is the second one I have seen this year!

Some random driftwood and seaweed:

Time to go:

Love kidney ferns too. Must get over there but I know DH will want to go to the top so maybe we'd better wait until Tim can manage it.

Great photos! We meant to make it there this holidays but it hasn't happened, you were lucky to catch a rain/hail/storm free day!
